Home damaged in water burst | Knife amnesty coming | Six things to do
Good morning, welcome to Thursday’s Start. If you’re enjoying these free daily bulletins, please do share or forward to a friend. Word of mouth really helps it grow. Onto today’s edition.
☀️ Today’s weather: A touch cooler than the last couple of days but still bright, clear and warm.
🌊 Thousands of gallons of water shot high into the air in Matson and left a nearby house with severe damage after a main burst. Residents were given bottled water and work will be ongoing by Severn Trent to fix the pipe after people nearby said they’d ‘never seen anything like it’. - Gloucestershire Live (live updates)
🏡 The house which suffered the brunt of the damage, pelted by high pressure water and debris, has been on the market since last year, priced at more than £1million. - Rightmove
🍺 Gloucester City Council wants the former Chambers pub to reopen as a food and drink business. It’s been shut since the coronavirus pandemic with the council advertising it on a leasehold basis. Hopes are rising that the nearby Forum development will make it a more appealing opportunity for someone. - Gloucester News Centre, via the Local Democracy Reporting Service
⛑️ Students studying for careers in the health and emergency services were put to the test in a simulation of a major incident mimicking a violent protest. Policing, nursing and diagnostic radiography students, among others, had to work together at Oxstalls Campus under pressure to solve unfolding challenges and help injured people. - BBC Gloucestershire
👑 The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester paid a royal visit to the city which bears their titles at the weekend. They witnessed the cathedral pay celebration to its American connections at a special Evensong. - Gloucester News Centre
↪️ The Duchess also visited Gloucestershire Academy of Music to mark its much-anticipated purchase of its Barbican House home 👇
👨⚕️ Men working at Gloucestershire’s hospitals are paid on average £6 an hour more than women. The ‘significant’ gender pay gap is primarily down to male staff predominantly gaining from excellence in care awards and bonus payments. - BBC Gloucestershire
📱 Bank TSB has joined forces with Gloucester-based charity The Hollie Gazzard Trust to offer customers fleeing or experiencing domestic abuse the Hollie Guard Extra app for free. The app turns a smartphone into a personal safety device and has already been downloaded 500,000 times. - Hollie Gazzard Trust
⚽ Gloucester City AFC has updated its badge for next season. Small adjustments to its shape, text and colours - it’s now a full circle instead of the previous adapted shape - mean it’s more user-friendly for marketing and merchandise. - Hello Rayo
🚨 Police and crime news
🚨 Police are investigating two break-ins, vandalism and a fire at Longlevens AFC over the weekend. Offensive graffiti had to be removed from its Saw Mills home moments before an under-15s game, and new equipment was stolen. - Gloucestershire Live
🚨 A fraudster created fake documents and falsified his CV to get jobs at two law firms. Aditya Rai, from Brockworth, used a fake university degree and passport, and a false UK driving licence, to gain employment. He’s been given a 20-month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work. - Gloucestershire Live
🚨 A knife amnesty runs across Gloucestershire next week in an effort to get blades off the streets. An amnesty bin will be available at Bearlands Police Station in Gloucester. - Your Community Alerts
