Hello and welcome to edition number 2 of The Gloucester Start. It’s early days but if you like what you’ve seen so far, feel free to spread the word and give us a share.
🏊♀️ Users of Gloucester’s main leisure centre should be delighted to hear it’s due for an £8million refurb, but questions on exactly how that money will be spent on facilities at GL1 were labelled ‘daft’ by council leaders. It’s expected that a new gym, soft play area, reception, steam room and sauna will be among some of the improvements, with Oxstalls Sports Park also benefiting. - Gloucestershire Live, via the Local Democracy Reporting Service
🐾 Don’t mess with Dara, as one suspected burglar found out yesterday morning. That’s because Dara is a German shepherd police dog who, together with his handler PC Adrian Cole, caught a 48-year-old suspect after a break-in at a shop near The Dukeries, in Westgate Street, in the early hours. - Gloucestershire Live ↪️ A similar incident was reported in the same area, at about the same time with a shop in Westgate Street broken into by two men, who ran off with goods. - Your Community Alerts
☕ How many coffee shops is too many? That’s the question on some lips after plans for a new drive-thru Starbucks at the Peel Centre, in St Ann Way, were signed off, days after a similar proposal for Kingsway. Gloucester already has at least 12 drive-thru coffee shops. - Punchline Gloucester
🛒 Costco’s plans for a superstore on Eastern Avenue are back in the spotlight with a planning application tabled for debate next week. The discount giant wants to open a store at the former Interbrew site, including a petrol station. They say it will create 250 jobs. - Gloucestershire Live
☀️ Today’s weather: We’re set for a bright and sunny day throughout, with temperatures reaching 9C.
🌊 The ‘constant anxiety’ of fearing their homes could flood has led to more than 260 residents petitioning for their road to be swept more often and drains kept unclogged. People living in Baneberry Road, Matson, want a flood prevention plan putting in place. - Gloucester News Centre, via the Local Democracy Reporting Service
🐕 How do you feel about dogs on leads, begging and street drinking in and around the city centre? PSPOs - Public Space Protection Orders - are in place to help prevent nuisance behaviours but they’re up for review and you can help influence what they cover in future. - Gloucester City Council
🚨 A suspected thief assaulted a shop staff member after they attempted to stop him leaving, inflicting facial injuries in the attack.
