⏩ The Gloucester Start: Thursday June 12th
Graves 'respect' warning | Robberies mapped | Moomin bookings open
Good morning, welcome to Thursday’s Start. Let’s get straight into today’s bulletin - here’s everything I’ve found.
🌧️ Today’s weather: Warm but wet with showers predicted for much of the day
🏺 The ribbon is being cut to open a discovery centre full of Museum of Gloucester artefacts that need sorting through today. It’s open from 1pm in Eastgate Shopping Centre. - Visit Gloucester
🪦 Increased council patrols are being carried out at Tredworth Road Cemetery after instances of dogs fouling on graves and owners failing to clear it up. The council has warned dog walkers to be ‘respectful’. - Gloucestershire Live
👮 Crime rates for robberies have been analysed and mapped, with Gloucester’s neighbourhoods showing differing results. In the city centre, 83 robberies were reported last year, a rate of seven per 1,000 people. - Gloucestershire Live (interactive)
🚨 Crimestoppers has launched a Gloucestershire-wide campaign to tackle modern slavery. It’s designed to raise awareness of the signs and encourage people to report it. - Punchline Gloucester
🔍 Staff with ‘little experience’ have been hired into a regional policing unit set up to tackle organised crime. Inspectors from His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services graded the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit ‘adequate’ overall but marked Gloucestershire Constabulary ‘inadequate’ - it’s one of of five forces across the area that’s part of the initiative. - BBC Gloucestershire
🎒 Ofsted inspectors have praised an after-school club in Longlevens. Creative Kids Club, based out of the area’s community centre, has a ‘happy buzz’, they found. - Gloucestershire Live
🎫 Booking is open for the programme events celebrating 80 years of the Moomins next weekend and beyond, including guided paddling sessions to get up close to the floating installation arriving in the Docks 👇
↪️ More about the free programme, timed to coincide with Refugee Week and channelling themes of welcoming, safety and belonging, has been published by the city council.
