Podsmead lives transformed | Airport sale debate | Things to do in Gloucester
Good morning, welcome to Monday’s Start. If you’re finding these bulletins useful or informative - and 96% of people who have responded to my reader survey so far have said they do - please do hit share or tell a friend or two. Word of mouth really helps. Here’s today’s edition.
🥵 Today’s weather: Peak heatwave - full sun and temperatures into the 30s.
💪 The lives of young people in Podsmead - one of the most health-deprived areas in the UK - are being ‘dramatically affected’ by the opening of the new Blackbridge Community and Sports Hub. Regular youth activities are on its programme as it held an open day on Saturday. - BBC Gloucestershire
👮 Extra police patrols took to Gloucester’s streets on Saturday night in an ongoing operation that’s having a ‘huge impact on deterring criminals from coming into our city’. Operation Comet looks to prevent youth crime, antisocial behaviour, violence against women and girls and the sale of drugs to help keep people safe at while out night. - BBC Gloucestershire
🛬 The sale of Gloucestershire Airport - for more than its £25million guide price - has been confirmed for approval by its owners Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough councils. - Gloucestershire Live, via the Local Democracy Reporting Service
↪️ But there’s frustration among some of the business owners at the site that the buyer’s identity is still being kept secret. - Punchline Gloucester
↪️ And opposition councillors don’t necessarily agree with the councils’ position that it needs to continue to operate as an airport. Members of the Community Independents group at the city council said it could solve housing needs by being developed into thousands of new homes. - Gloucestershire Live, via LDRS
⚖️ Customers were left thousands of pounds out of pocket by a Gloucester businessman who failed to supply and install woodburners as promised. Daniel Hatton was found guilty of six offences but was absent from the court and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. - Gloucestershire Live
